Benjamin Franklin

I am taking a literature class and have to write an essay on Benjamin Franklin. I found some entertaining information. I listed some of the things he invented. You may be surprised!

  • Ben had poor vision and needed glasses to read. He had two pairs of spectacles cut in half and put each in a single frame so he could see both near and far. Today we know them as bifocals.
  • Ben developed a flexible urinary catheter that appears to have been the first one produced in America. His brother John suffered from kidney stones.
  • He invented swim fins that divers wear.
  • He invented the armonica (a glass harmonica). While in England he attended a concert given on wine glasses. The loved the sweet sound and wanted to hear more harmonies with this type of melody.
  • Everyone knows the famous kite story. But Ben did not "invent" electricity. He did invent the lightning rod which protected buildings and ships from lightning damage.
  • Franklin Stove. In colonial America, most people warmed their homes with the fireplace, which was dangerous and used a lot of wood. Ben's invention of an iron furnance allowed people to warm their homes less dangerously and with less wood.
  • Ben also established the first fire company and first fire insurance company in order to help people live more safely.
  • Ben was also a postmaster. He figured out routes for delivering the mail. Even went out riding his carriage to measure the routes and invented a simple odometer.
  • Ben had a lot of books and it was difficult for him to reach them on high shelves. He invented a tool called "a long arm". It was a wooden pole with a grasping claw at the end.
  • This isn't an invention, but I found it interesting. Ben was a vegetarian!

I hope you enjoyed this little tidbit of information on one of our founding fathers.

American Idol

Anyone like to watch American Idol? Brandon and I have watched it for the last few years. I really liked Chris Daughtry and David Cook from previous seasons. This year my favorites are Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert. We'll have to watch and see how far my favorites go.

Danny Gokey

Adam Lambert

I'd like to know who you would vote for!

Painting the Office

I work for my step-dad. He has had his own business since 1991. I started working for him in 1995. He bought an office building in 2004. This week we are painting. I really shouldn't say "we" because I'm just watching this fiasco happen around me. My son, Ahren and another employee, Justin is painting. Three walls will be yellow and the back wall along with the trim will be blue. It's already starting to look so much better than before!

Don't you just love the picture of Riley "helping"?!

Obama Speech

Did anyone watch the President's speech Tuesday night? I am personally an Obama supporter, but would like to hear everyone's opinion. How is our economy affecting YOU?

Bath time with Morgan

I love to scrapbook but haven't had much time lately. So I tried digital scrapbooking on my computer. It was quicker and it turned out pretty good! This is a picture of my niece, Morgan from a day last June. Her parents went away and she slept over at our house. I gave her a bath in our kitchen sink! I used to do that with the boys when they were little and they loved splashing and making a mess!

Whatever you give a woman

Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater.
  • If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby.
  • If you give her a house, she'll give you a home.
  • If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal.
  • If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart.
  • She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.
  • So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit.

Eat Mor Chikin

After Saturday's hockey game victory, we stopped at Chick Filet to get some lunch. What a wonderful surprise to see the cow there!! The cow was great with all the kids in such a busy restaurant! He would take drinks off the tables and switch them around or sit at peoples tables. Very funny cow! Shortly after lunch we had to take the boys (Brandon, Zachary, Zak F., Jack O.) to a lacrosse clinic. To top off the evening we had dinner at our house with friends and played cards. It was a great Saturday!

Hockey Weekend

Brandon played the most physical game he ever had! Wow! The hits and checks were very impressive. The only time he made me nervous was when he was trying to clear the puck from the side of his net and a boy from the other team tried to trip him. Brandon then accidently hit the puck on his own net. Luckily our goalie stopped the shot!! It was a great hockey weekend!

Snack Food from England

My cousin Ann sent us a huge box of snack foods from England. The boys were so excited to get the package and tore off the wrapper UNTIL.............. they saw the names on the bags and boxes!
Types of Chips:
  • Onion Bhajo
  • Chilli & Chocolate
  • Builders Breakfast
  • Fish & Chips
  • Crispy Duck & Hoisin
  • Cajun Squirrel

Thank you Ann for sending us so many goodies! It was fun to watch the boys faces as they tried new things!

Aunt Martha

Since the boys can remember I have always talked about Aunt Martha coming to visit. My husband would ask me "Are you crabby since Aunt Martha is on her way?" or "Why are you crying? Is Aunt Martha coming?". Aunt Martha is nothing but a pain that I must endure once a month! My husband rejoices when Aunt Martha goes home! The boys couldn't understand why I HATE Aunt Martha. I know "hate" is a strong word, but as women I think you can understand.
Zachary is 13, going on 14. It was a priceless moment to see his face light up with understanding when he realized Aunt Martha was not a real person, but that time of the month women must face. He said quote: "I wondered why I never saw Aunt Martha and why you hated her so much." I couldn't help but laugh out loud! I really think this story should be turned into that Mastercard commercial.
