The British are Coming!

A major party of American history was the Revolutionary War.   The early American legend tells us the Paul Revere road through the streets of Boston yelling "The British are coming!"  When in fact this is a myth.
In fact, Paul Revere never yelled "The British are coming!".  It wouldn't make much sense because  the majority of residence in Boston were mostly British during that time period.  (I'm kind of a geek when it comes to Early American History and it helps to know my husband, the history teacher).
Once I asked my husband "Why would Paul Revere shout "The British are coming!"
Weren't they were already here??
=)
Todd and I went to a re-inactment at the Daniel Boone Homestead.
It was a very hot day. I couldn't imagine wearing wool uniforms in this heat.
The re-inactment was held at the Daniel Boone Homestead.
Daniel Boone is one of America's famous frontiersmen.
He moved his family to this homestead in 1730.
NBC aired a television show in the 1960s about Daniel Boone.
That is before my time, so I can't say if it was an accurate portrayal of Daniel Boone or not.
The re-inactment was a really neat experience.   It's one thing to read about the RevolutionaryWar and it's another thing to see it! At the end of the re-inactment the "troops" spoke to the crowd and answered questions any one had.

One boy asked, "Why did the British wear red?"

The 'soldier' had an interesting answer.  He said that when the muskets were fired, there was always a lot of smoke.  The bright colors helped the soldiers determine who was a friend or foe.
Interesting little tidbit I didn't know. (I told you I was a history geek!).

  1. This is interesting. My husband is a history geek too and I have always loved history. My son is going into 7th grade and he has US History this year - kinda excited about that!!! :) I went to Antietam once and they do battle re-enactments their too but not when we were there.

  2. Thanks for that bit of information/history on Paul Revere. Looks like you had a good time at the re-inactment. Your pictures are awesome!

  3. Wow, that is interesting and makes sense about the red uniforms. We have Fort Snelling here in Minnesota and they do re-enactments and it's always hot. I've thought the same thing how miserable that must feel. I hated history when I was in high school and now I've gained a little more of an interest in it and wished I would have paid attention and retained info. Especially when my kids ask questions or need help with homework. Live and learn, live and learn. :-)

  5. Oh I need to tell you that my SIMC post has purple in it.
I starting think of some guesses as to what PR might have shouted. I was going to say, "get up the shit is about to hit the fan," but that can't be it since they didn't have fans like we have now. Maybe it was, "hey anyone have extra gun powder?". Fun post.

  6. I knew that one!!

It amazes me sometimes how much I know about American History...as a Canadian. I remember Daniel Boone being one of my favourites.

In my hometown of Kingston, Ontario, they still run the Old Fort Henry: a fully operational military fort that was originally constructed during the War of 1812 (um yeah, sorry about your White House - ha). It maintains a permanent Guard Staff and does daily demonstrations during the summer months of what life was like in the fort, military formations, and Sunset Ceremonies where they shoot the canons. It's very cool to tour the fort and see what life would have been like.

If the Zombie Apocalypse really hits -- that's where I am heading. :)

  7. I don't know much about Canadian history (sorry). I remember there was some battles fought there during our revolutionary war, but couldn't tell you the details. Maybe Fort Henry should be my next trip. As long as the Zombies don't eat me first. ;-)

  8. haha! I didn't think of it that way. Perhaps he is just thinking "I'm outta here!"

  9. It's neat to hear about the Forts all over the country. Seems like we had battles everywhere!
Lucky for me, hubby is a history teacher and can answer all the boys question about that topic. Now math, that's a different story! LOL

  10. I'm glad you liked it. It was kind of a fluke that we saw the sign along the road telling us about the reenactment. I'm glad we did and glad we went.

  11. Which do you know more of? German or American history?

  12. Probably German history as I grew up with that. But I do know quite a bit about American History by now as well. I still vividly remember my American History teacher from HS - he was amazing and I aced his class!!! I'm not so good with specific dates but I know the order of things. :)
